Shade Flowers



There are many different kinds of flowers that love being in the shade. Below are just a few examples of flowers you can use to fill in shady spots.

Astilbe

There are many varieties of astilbe- red, white, pink, and salmon. They bloom in mid to late summer and can grow anywhere between 8 inches to 2 feet tall.

Columbine

Columbine flowers are star-shaped and can be red, white, blue and white, or red and yellow. Columbine like partial shade and blooms sporadically in the spring. Flowers can grow 10" to 2 ft tall.


Common Bleeding Heart

This plant thrives in light shade and has beautiful flowers which are described by its name. It has pink and white flowers and blooms in the late spring or early summer. Bleeding hearts are perennials and grow about 24-36 in. tall.

Iris Cristata

Iris cristata is a spreading and clumping iris. It only grows about 3-5 inches and is usually found in lavender, however white varieties are availiable.

Lily-of-the-Valley

Lillies-of-the-Valley are fragrant flowers that bloom in the springtime. They can spread quickly and require full shade. They grow to be 6-8 inches and also thrive in cool, moist areas.

Vinca

Vinca are evergreen plants that have dark green leaves and form small blue-purple flowers during the spring. They spread quickly and require shade with a little sun.

Roses

Many types of roses also thrive in shade. Some of the best-known types are: (pictured in this order below) Ballerina, Belinda, and Cordelia
